Beverly Hills Wood Roof Ordinance Beverly Hills Approved Hull Brothers Roofing

Beverly Hills Wood Roof Ordinance / Beverly Hills Approved Hull Brothers Roofing

As you may be aware, the City of Beverly Hills passed an Ordinance in 1989 requiring that all new roofs must be a fire-retardant roof covering or roof assembly that is listed as a Class A assembly.

This Ordinance also required that all existing wood shingle and wood shake roofs in The City of Beverly Hills meet this same standard by July 01, 2013. Originally, this meant that all homes and buildings with a wood shingle or wood shake roof had to be completely re-roofed by July 01, 2013 to be in compliance with the original terms of the Ordinance. In 2013, and with public input, The City of Beverly Hills would also allow as an option and in lieu of re-roofing, the application by their qualified/approved contractors certain approved fire retardant sprays to existing wood shingle and wood shake roofs. Other conditions would apply to the option of applying the fire retardant spray including the need to periodically re-apply the fire retardant and the need to provide to the City their completed Fire Retardant Spray Affidavit.

See Beverly Hills Municipal Code Sections 1501.1 General through 1501.1.1 and General Requirements R902.1 General and R902.1.6 Fire retardant Spray For Non-Class A Wood Roofs.

To insure compliance and continued compliance with the Ordinance, The City of Beverly Hills has employed the law offices of Dapeer Rosenblit Litvak, LLP to assist with their Code Enforcement. The law offices are sending letters to certain Beverly Hills owners with existing wood shingle or wood shake roofs. These letters contain valuable information and helpful resources with the objective of insuring continued compliance with the Ordinance. These letters may also state certain minimum dates for Ordinance compliance that require recipients to both acquire The City of Beverly Hills documents (Permits) and actually complete the work, i.e. re-roofing or spraying fire retardant.

Beverly Hills Owners with existing wood shingle or wood shake roofs must understand that The City of Beverly Hills considers wood shingle and wood shake roofs to be very detrimental to public health, safety and welfare and it is the full intent of The City of Beverly Hills to continue the Code Enforcement of the Wood Roof Ordinance until such time as there are no more wood shingle or wood shake roofs in their City.

The Owners of wood shingle and wood shake roofs will continue to be faced with pressure on their pocketbooks, whether in the form of re-roofing now, or the continued periodic costs of re-spraying fire retardants. Hull Brothers Roofing highly recommends the various intelligent and innovative financing programs offered by Renovate America and their HERO Program for re-roofing. Re-spraying will be a continued periodic cost to the Owner.

Hull Brothers Roofing is a 90 year old family owned roofing and waterproofing company here at our same Culver City business address for the last 58 years and has repaired and re-roofed the homes and businesses of Beverly Hills for those same 90 years. Chuck Jewett, CEO of Hull Brothers Roofing, was contacted by The City of Beverly Hills to solicit his expertise in the standardization of the process to achieve Class “A” fire ratings for roofing, verify Class “A” ratings and other technical aspects about roofing in general, and he is continuing his service by providing valuable information to Owners about this Ordinance and compliance.
